What Happens to My Policy if I Move to Another State?

People worry about this more than they need to for life insurance, and less than they should for Medicare. They work quite differently.

Life insurance: it comes with you

Your policy is a contract with the insurance company. Moving doesn't change the coverage, the premium, or the beneficiaries. There's nothing to reapply for and no new underwriting.

What is worth doing when you move:

• Update your mailing address with the carrier so notices actually reach you — a lapse caused by a missed bill is entirely avoidable and genuinely happens.
• Confirm your beneficiaries are still who you want them to be. Moves often coincide with other life changes.
• If your housing costs changed significantly, revisit whether the coverage amount still matches the mortgage.

Medicare: moving can open a door

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are built around regional networks and service areas. Move outside your plan's area and your plan generally won't follow you.

The good news is that moving is a qualifying event. It opens a Special Enrollment Period, giving you a window to choose a plan that works where you now live. Miss that window and you may be waiting until the Annual Enrollment Period in the fall.

Medicare Supplement plans behave differently again — they generally travel better, since they work with any provider who accepts Medicare. That any-doctor freedom is one of the reasons people who move or travel often prefer them.

Will I still be your agent?

Usually, yes. I'm licensed in 30 states, so most moves change nothing about who you call. If you land somewhere I'm not yet licensed, licenses can be added — and I'd rather do that than hand you off to a stranger.

Either way, tell me before you move rather than after. A move is one of the few moments where timing genuinely matters.
